The Myrtle Beach Pelicans hit a homerun for family-fun entertainment
Since its inception, baseball has been the gateway by which untold thousands to have fun with family and friends.
It’s no wonder then that the Myrtle Beach Pelicans have become an integral part of Myrtle Beach’s personality in a relatively short time.
“We draw a wide range of people to our games,” said Zach Brockman, senior director of ticketing for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans Baseball Club. “We provide a fun, family atmosphere for fans of all ages and backgrounds.”
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans made their debut in Myrtle Beach in 1999.
Their arrival marked the end of the city’s seven-year drought of being without a minor league team after the Myrtle Beach Hurricanes departed.
Baseball fans embraced The Pelicans immediately, as people who lived in Myrtle Beach and surrounding cities came to experience what minor league baseball was all about at what was then Coastal Federal Field that later became BB&T Field and is now TicketReturn.com Field.
What hasn’t been changing, however, is the enthusiasm and enjoyment found at each Pelicans’ game.
“In between innings, we play games with the crowd,” Brockman said. “We also engage the fans with contests.”
One contest calls for two fans to dress up in sumo costumes and then battle each other in a sumo-like contest.
In a separate contest, a camera pans through the audience and challenges fans to dance. The crowd chooses the winner after the dance-off.
Kristine Zell, the on-field host of The Pelicans, said each game is full of excitement. Her job is to spearhead entertainment between innings during home games.
“There is really good energy there,” said Zell, whose job is to spearhead entertainment between innings during home games. “It’s fun to be outside and get the family together. People are screaming and yelling and having a lot of fun. In major league games, people are more into the game instead of the entertainment. But at minor league games, people are more into the entertainment.”
One of the most thrilling aspects at any home game of The Pelicans is the presence of its mascot Splash. Splash does whatever is necessary to keep smiles on faces and keep the crowd pumped up throughout each game.
Splash performs dances, flips, splits and engages in a variety of antics so there is never a dull moment for spectators.
“Splash is all about the place during our games,” Brockman said. “He is at all 70 of our home games. He is all about interacting with the fans.”
Some of those fans stay at the Suites of The Market Common, which is Myrtle Beach’s version of an urban village with a Southern hospitality personality.
At the Suites of The Market Common guests cannot only enjoy the comfort and convenience of one or two bedroom suites but also peruse the 35 stores and eight restaurants that comprise The Market Common. And just like the games of The Pelicans, The Market Common celebrates the spirit of family and friends.
“When you come to a game, it’s actually a pretty mix crowd,” Zell said. “You have diehard baseball fans, families, Coastal Carolina (University) students and tourists. We get a lot of tourists.”
No matter who attends the games, they all can enjoy the games, entertainment and the presence of Splash, as well as the special promotions held during the week.
On Mondays, for instance, children 12 and under eat free. And there is plenty to eat at the four different concessions at TicketReturn.com Field. Barbecue, fried pickles and chicken bog balls (deep fried with a special sauce) are among the eats. Other special promotions include the following: Weiner Wednesday, which allows fans to purchase hot dogs for just $1 each hump day, and Thirsty Thursday, when beer is $1.
“It’s cheap entertainment, and there is really no bad seat in the house at Ticketreturn.com Field,” Zell said. “You are close (to the players). You are in all the action.”
